Madebyhandonline.com is dedicated to promoting high quality British Contemporary Craft. We're a small team behind the scenes, based in beautiful Devon in the South West of England, working across the UK Craft industry with and for our makers. Our carefully curated website brings together a community of approximately 130 selected makers from around the UK, to celebrate and sell their work online.
Our collection represents a highly selective mix of the finest UK based makers, with an enviable group of jewellers, ceramic artists, printmakers and textile artists, as well as beautiful pieces made from paper, glass, metal and wood. We’re so pleased to be working with so many fabulous makers and hope you will join us in supporting and promoting their incredible skills. Founded at the end of 2010, our site and brand was designed to express a deep respect for the making community and to truly represent the value of high quality handmade products. We're not a marketplace - our aim is to offer something different, so we're more of a curated contemporary craft shop and pr tool for makers. This is now the second version of our site. We launched this shiny version at the end of the summer 2016.
Our founding director Katie Honnor is always looking for creative ways to promote makers and support their businesses, both online and in the ‘real’ world. Her love of handmade ceramics, jewellery, printmaking, sculpture and textiles is evident from her own home, yet her care, respect and understanding of what it is to be a maker within the UK is what has made her and our website stand out as true advocates of Contemporary Craft.
A former teacher and school governor, Katie is also passionate about education, the passing of skills and future development of crafts. Katie's taste is very varied, making her a strong curator - always passionate about high quality and with a determination to encourage careful, conscious purchases and help prevent Craft from being presented as either a little hobby or (at the other end of the spectrum) luxury goods.
Forever championing others, Katie finds it very hard to write about herself, so one of our makers sent us words to sum her up...
1. Inquisitive - always searching out new aesthetics and beauty.
2. Knowledgeable - a deep knowledge and experience of the craft world.
3. Champion - puts the makers right at the heart of the business.
4. Nurturing - supports new makers and understands that it takes time to develop confidence and a complete artistic voice.
5. Empathetic - understands that artists are humans too and not a robot on a production line.
6. Sensitive - understands the tactile joy that handmade objects bring to both makers and customers.
Oh yeah and 7. Integrity - see all of the above.
Thank you Iain of Print Garage!
We love to work with other organisations and national events to help champion British Contemporary Craft and we sponsor some of the UK's leading Craft and Design events, including The Contemporary Craft Festival, Tutton&Young Ltd's MADE London and MADE Brighton and The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. Katie is also a Kaleider Resident.
Our passion for the industry has driven us to do more… madebyhandonline is more than just a shopping site. We do all we can to spread the word about inspirational events, exhibitions and employment opportunities, letting people know where they can see work, as well as find courses and workshops where they can learn how to acquire skills themselves.
The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to buy from Designer/Makers and Independent Galleries and Shops by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even 'just a card' are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses. Please do check out their website. Thank you to the tireless organisers of this campaign, and thanks to everyone who helps us and other small businesses to support makers.
