Laura Thomas is an award-winning woven textile artist and designer producing striking artworks for the contemporary interior. Educated at Birmingham City University, The Royal College of Art and ASF-Weave, Laura established her studio practice in 2003 when she moved back to Wales. Laura divides her time between public and private art projects, design consultancy, curation, education and making work to exhibit in selected galleries.
Laura has a very diverse portfolio of work, but is perhaps most well-known for her Resonate series. Inventive textile constructions or seemingly loose threads are carefully encapsulated in acrylic resin to create sculptural freestanding artworks and wall mounted panels where the interplay of light and shadow can be appreciated to full effect. The resin encapsulation makes the colour of the yarns more vivid and the seemingly free-flowing threads undulate to create movement. Rooted in craft practice, the juxtaposition of the fine cloth and the hard-edged acrylic, results in totally unexpected ‘textile’ artworks. Each piece is completely unique.
Examples of Laura’s artworks can be found in the permanent collections of The Victoria & Albert Museum, The National Wool Museum, Crafts Study Centre and The Powerhouse Museum in Australia.
Commissioning a piece of work is really exciting – it is a chance to have something made especially for you and an opportunity to really engage in the creative process.
Perhaps you need accessories to go with a particular outfit or a piece of furniture to fit a specific space in your home. We can work with you to design something truly unique. You’ll be able to discuss your ideas, likes and dislikes with the Maker and together create a piece of craft, handmade for you.
This is just a first step, so don't worry, there’ll be plenty of chances to discuss details before finalising a commission.
