Hendrike Barz-Meltzer

Hendrike creates jewellery with a clear, understated and elegant aesthetic. Being initially fascinated by lines, she is increasingly intrigued by patterns and what happens when repetitive patterns are interrupted. Her current focus is on ancient Greek ceramics and Islamic decorations. These patterns find expression in her pieces through the application of gold on silver backgrounds, using ancient techniques such as Korean Keum-Boo or overlay. All pieces are designed and hand-made by her in her Hertfordshire studio.

Hendrike believes passionately in the value and appeal of the hand-made and – to avoid over-production – keeps the production small and sells her work through carefully selected galleries/online platforms, her web-shop and in-person fairs.

She highly values the direct contact with customers and the opportunity to relay to them the processes, materials and ideas involved in the making of her pieces.

Environmental sustainability and an ethical working practice are paramount considerations in her practice and constitute an on-going process of reflection and improvement. These principles guide her selection of materials, chemicals and working practices.
