My work is inspired by stories, poems, over-hearings and memories. Re-using materials, especially textiles, is an integral part of my work. I like to feel that they have ‘lived a little’ with their own story to tell showing signs of ageing and how they have been treated or, perhaps, mistreated.
Every discarded object is a piece of the patchwork of someone else’s life. The way in which materials (particularly textiles and garments) are carelessly discarded is a source of sadness and brings out a need to ‘rescue’.
My work is very time consuming but I enjoy getting completely lost in the making. The jewellery has a silver wire frame around which I sew, by hand and sometimes with my lovely old sewing machine, the fragments of fabric using traditional stitching techniques. The books I use in my work are orphans that I find when out on rummages.
PLEASE NOTE: Betty Pepper is away for a couple of weeks. Orders can be placed but won’t be commenced until May 2nd.
Commissioning a piece of work is really exciting – it is a chance to have something made especially for you and an opportunity to really engage in the creative process.
Perhaps you need accessories to go with a particular outfit or a piece of furniture to fit a specific space in your home. We can work with you to design something truly unique. You’ll be able to discuss your ideas, likes and dislikes with the Maker and together create a piece of craft, handmade for you.
This is just a first step, so don't worry, there’ll be plenty of chances to discuss details before finalising a commission.
