Betty Pepper

My work is inspired by stories, poems, over-hearings and memories. Re-using materials, especially textiles, is an integral part of my work. I like to feel that they have ‘lived a little’ with their own story to tell showing signs of ageing and how they have been treated or, perhaps, mistreated.

Every discarded object is a piece of the patchwork of someone else’s life. The way in which materials (particularly textiles and garments) are carelessly discarded is a source of sadness and brings out a need to ‘rescue’.

My work is very time consuming but I enjoy getting completely lost in the making. The jewellery has a silver wire frame around which I sew, by hand and sometimes with my lovely old sewing machine, the fragments of fabric using traditional stitching techniques. The books I use in my work are orphans that I find when out on rummages. I am based in Yoxford in Suffolk.
