I am an artist, a collector of “treasures” and a compulsive hand stitcher. I combine these passions in making one-off wall pieces that spark a sense of nostalgia.
I use materials with a history – the kind of things that lie forgotten in the bottoms of drawers. Commonplace items that were used by our mothers and grandmothers as they went about their every-day domestic chores. I think about the “lives” that these things led before they came into my hands and wonder about their “hidden stories.”
Whether working with wood or cloth I layer, patch and piece my different materials together before starting the wonderful task of hand stitching. There is something very personal about leaving your mark with needle and thread - it is a slow, thoughtful process.
My days are spent, with Annie the pooch, working in a purple shed in the garden of my home just outside Edinburgh.
**Ali is busy working on some exciting new projects for 2017 and we hope to have some more of her work for you in the future.**
Commissioning a piece of work is really exciting – it is a chance to have something made especially for you and an opportunity to really engage in the creative process.
Perhaps you need accessories to go with a particular outfit or a piece of furniture to fit a specific space in your home. We can work with you to design something truly unique. You’ll be able to discuss your ideas, likes and dislikes with the Maker and together create a piece of craft, handmade for you.
This is just a first step, so don't worry, there’ll be plenty of chances to discuss details before finalising a commission.
